William Wogan was educated for the bar and admitted to Gray's Inn on 23 may 1653. He was called to the Bar on 1 June 1660, and was made serjeant at Bar on 11 April, and king's serjeant on 11 May, 1689. He was knighted on 31 Oct 1689, and was chief justice of the Carmarthen Circuit of the Great Sessions from 1689 till he resigned in 1701. He was M.P. for co. Pembroke from 8 to 28 Mar 1681, and M.P. for Haverfordwest in 1679, 1685-7 and 1689-1700. He was twice married,but left no surviving issue by either of his wives. His first wife was Elizabeth daughter and co-heiress of Sir John Ashburnham, and widow of Sir John Jacob of Bromley, co.Middlesex, bart.

His second wife, whom he married in 1703 [MS of Peter le Neve, Norroy King of Arms], was Mary, the daughter of Dame Elisabeth Purbeck of Hatton Gardens, co. Middlesex, by her husband Viscount Purbeck. Sir William Wogan died in London on 1 Dec 1708 [Papers of the Great Sessions, 2 Geo I], and administration of his effects was granted in March 1709, to his widow Lady Wogan, and his nephew William Wogan.
